Two weeks ago I got a call from my doctor, who I’d gone to see the day before because I’d been feeling worn out and was losing weight, and wasn’t sure why.

He was brief: “Amit, you’ve got Acute Leukemia. You need to enter treatment right away.”

I was terrified. I packed a backpack full of clothes, went to the hospital as he’d instructed, and had transfusions through the night to allow me to take a flight home at 7am the next day. I Googled acute leukemia as I lay in my hospital bed, learning that if it hadn’t been caught, I’d have died within weeks.

I have a couple more months of chemo to go, then the next step is a bone marrow transplant. As Jay and Tony describe below, minorities are severely underrepresented in the bone marrow pool, and I need help.

A few ways to help:
If you’re South Asian, get a free test by mail. You rub your cheeks with a cotton swab and mail it back. It’s easy.
If you’re in NYC, you can go to this event my friends are putting on.
If you know any South Asians (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, or Sri Lanka), please point ‘em to the links above.

My friend Amit Gupta founded my favorite photography site Photojojo. A few weeks ago, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Amit is one of the nicest, most genuine, most creative people you could ever meet. Prior to founding the awesome Photojojo, he also co-founded Jelly in 2006 in NYC, a coworking community, that’s now spread to 60 cities across the world and helped spark the coworking revolution. It looks like Amit will need a bone marrow transplant quite soon. We can help him with that.

Unlike blood transfusions, finding a genetic match for bone marrow that his body will accept is no easy task. The national bone marrow registry has 9.5 million records on file, yet the chances of someone from South Asian descent of finding a match are only 1 in 20,000.

This is where we come in. We’re going to destroy those odds.

How? By finding and registering as many people of South Asian descent as we possibly can.

Tests are easy– a simple swab of the cheek. If you’re a match, the donation involves an outpatient procedure. It’s not fun, but it’s not dangerous either. And doing it could save a life.

We are encouraging anyone of South Asian descent to take a test to see if you’re a match.

You can get a free test by mail, or, if you’re in New York, you can join us Friday, October 14th for a special party to rally support.

We’ll have test kits on hand at the party, as well as music, booze, and maybe even a photo booth. It will, for the first time, combine a House 2.0-style party with a New Work City-style party, and if you’ve ever been to either, you know they are always something special.

Please spread the word and please do everything you can to help Amit beat leukemia. He’s a superstar.

i'm always in and out of blogging. sometimes i'm constantly at it...drawing non-stop on different surfaces and sketching ideas, and other times the creative fuel just runs out. o_O strange...but i'm trying to keep motivated. need to scan recent sketches and doodles. as well as develop all the film from recent travels. meanwhile...i'm still here.

My sister and I conjured up the awesome idea...

of making him a Doppleganger! :p

Out of all the things we thought of giving him, this one still stood out. It's personal and fun, and who wouldn't want to see themselves immortalized into a toy?! So, I went to work. As soon as I was done, I sent it over via priority mail (from Italy to California) and it got there in perfect timing, with days to spare for his special day. :)

Now, I need to finish up our whole family! :p It was really fun drawing someone I knew very well. I think it further motivated me to make sure the interpretation was right on the money. And I think our Pops really liked his mini me too...actually my mom might love it more. haha!

Anyway, cheers to you Dad! :) Even though you have a mini doppleganger, we know you're still one of a kind!

These pictures were taken after the Los Angeles screening of their documentary Restrepo (If you have not seen it, pls. do).

This documentary is special to me and really our current Army family, because the unit they shot in Restrepo, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, is the same unit in which my husband currently belongs. Some of our neighbors were in this documentary, which gave us a better idea of why life at home was the way it was for them. Restrepo, who was the group's medic, was a friend to many soldiers in the unit...a friend to my own friends. Tim Hetherington and Tim Junger put out a documentary that does one thing, bring the truth of war (shot in this one grueling year) to those back home, to show what our soldiers really go through. It's as honest as it will get in the life of these warriors. And by warriors, I mean men who really earned the term, who sacrificed so much of themselves, who fight for the brothers they lost, and for the brothers beside them. Even both directors gained these soldiers' respect, earning their own place by being in one of the most dangerous posts at the time they shot the documentary.

Tim expressed that the goal really of the film was to show the humanity in the soldiers. They get bored, they do their best to have fun, they are brothers, they cried, they were vulnerable, but they were brave. Restrepo really shows that, and they did an exceptional job conveying it. Tim could not have been more gracious....as he took more time after the Q&A to talk amongst the audiences outside the theatre. I was able to tell him about the guys being back there again, and related about the guys who were my neighbors, whom we both knew, but of course in different settings. He was very down to earth and only wished for the safety of the guys being back. Just a first-class man, a tremendous person.

It was truly an honor meeting you Tim. Thanks for your time. And thanks for doing what you love, for bringing yourself and your camera literally in the middle of chaos, and risking your own life, just so you can share stories that matter, that should be seen, that should be on the front pages. May you Rest in Peace.

and this one below... is a cardboard i cut out to use a shield for when my film dispenses out of my polaroid camera. since the Impossible film is still sensitive to light (but they are improving this) we have to immediately shield it. here's my fun solution to this. :)

Japan Smiles Back :)

The post just right before this shows the "Ganbatte Nippon" poster I created for these awesome folks. They have started a campaign to bring smiles to the people of Japan by going around its cities and handing out small posters that reads the phrase quoted above. It translates into "You Can Do It Japan" in English.

Many people soon followed their lead, including myself, to try and extend our love through art works and photographs. I've never felt as warm in the heart as I did seeing this...

This was taken by the "Ganbatte Nippon" team on the streets of Tokyo. The multiple other awesome posters held by so many other smiling people of Japan can be found here.

Meanwhile the photograph below was taken in Taiwan where the team's campaign photographer took to the streets of Taipei. See more of the album here.

I recently "liked" a cause on facebook, called "Ganbatte Nippon - You Can Do It Japan." I found them through a post on one of the sites i follow on my google reader. To send the country a smile and encouragement, they started printing out a picture of Ultraman carrying the Japanese flag and gave it to people to photograph with. Shots vary from tourists to natives, adults and children alike, taken in Tokyo to give hope to a devastated country, even if it isn't much it's something.

I just saw a man cry helplessly as he tried to explain to news reporters that his wife and two sons are nowhere to be found. You can tell he was trying to be strong...but his spirit is so crushed. This is for him, it may never reach him...but sir, I'm praying for you...that you may have the strength to get through this.

For you Japan...You can do it.

1st Attempt: Impossible Dark Slide (the dark card that spits out upon loading film on Polaroid cam)

Hmm... my subject's detail was probably lost against the sunlight coming in from the doors. Also, without the flash, the focus is lost on the foreground. To get the detail up front, I may have to take a picture with flash, but not too close to the subject so it doesn't drown out the little guy with a flashy bright light. We'll see...

On my Ipad, of course!

Nothing better than the latest technology to get the job done. Look at all my apps!

My favourite markers are an Edding 400, a Sharpie and a Copic Ciao. The white gouache is from Dr Martins and does a decent job covering up whatever needs to be covered up, and flows well from the brush.

I start with a rough drawing in cyan. When I’m happy with my rough, I go over it with said markers. The bleedproof white is then applied to take out white lines and shapes.

After I’m done, I scan the page. I adjust the hue to get rid of the blue sketch lines and adjust the levels slightly to obtain better contrast. Presto!

This marker doodle eventally became a bonafida Threadless T-shirt design!

represents. it's about connectivity. it's that at least one person, thousands of miles apart from me, can relate to my individuality and be fascinated by the exact same things i am...like polaroids, vinyl toys or vintage tin signs. Todd Bieber, for example, finds a film canister in the middle of blizzard stricken NY and was allured not only by the black and white photographs that it carried, but also by its photographers (and there were plenty of somethings about those photos...they're like dreams really...that's how it felt looking at them). Todd felt as if he can go on adventures with these complete strangers if he met them, simply by their shot at the lens. that's magnetic...though it's not surprising at all being that "pictures are worth a thousand words"...and it's job is to draw in the viewer to relate with the picture or with the person who took it. this is really getting a glimpse of what people are about. doesn't matter who you are, what background you have or time zone you're from...there's this single strand in our system that craves to network, that magical thing we call CONNECTION. :) and if it takes putting on some old ski's, goin' out in a blizzard, and finding random objects to discover a kindred spirit, then so be it. after all, one man's lost treasure could be another man's new treasure, and that man is just waiting to return it to sender. :)

was just having recent convo w/ one of my two brother in laws about the artist...and how they saw his work recently at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. well lookit' here! today's his birthday, so they "logogrammed" his still life piece. guess all that's left to say is, happy birthday to mr. paul cezzane. i've enjoyed studying you in art books and your my sister's fave still-life artist...so cheers to you!

so as of late, i've finally decided, it's time to jump back into shooting my polaroid camera. so w/ only two polaroids left loaded in my one600, i go online to get refills. well to my BIG SHOCK
the price just about tripled for everything that has "classic polaroid" written all over it. my husband, who gave me my camera, only paid $40 for it, and now, it's going for nearly $200... at minimum. "o_O are they out of their minds!" - i thought! one site after another brought me to $4 per film square. IT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE when i didn't do anything upon hearing that Polaroid was discontinuing production of all the classic cameras and films out there. my fault -_- gah...

anyway...i found myself trying the impossible task, feeling helpless as i wanted to fill my creative hunger, of finding a resolve to this issue. how am i gonna take polaroids now? am i willing to pay $4 a pop for instant film?! that's like robbing me silly! but i love it so much!

as i almost certainly gave up...and as my husband coaxed me to accept the inevitable...i stumbled upon...

after reading and reading on who these guys are and what they're about i had my a-ha moment! (yes, i've taken this from oprah :p) I LOVE THESE PEOPLE! we're back in business! and even though, as i noticed, and as they honestly point out that their products are a working progress...this is the very reason you respect them even more. they are doing the whole revival project for the love of it...and for the folks who love and have not abandoned the simple classic...the art that is POLAROID.

so...from one artist to the IMPOSSIBLE team (man, i really wish i can type a backwards "P") wait wait, IMOSSIBLE (ahh...there we go! good 'nuf for government work ;D)...i'd like to say...

"Sacred Spaces" by Nancy Gibbs of TIME Magazine...

Today's mail included the Aug. 30. 2010 Edition of TIME Magazine. The cover reveals the deeply debated subject of building a mosque near Ground Zero. This post isn't about me taking sides.

Instead, it's about the last page in the magazine titled Sacred Spaces. Nancy Gibbs, the author of the short essay does a solid and objective piece of writing that I found surprising (maybe because everything that's said about the subject is quite harsh and heated). It is solemn and only raises questions about how "sacredness" is different for every individual.

Here's her last paragraph that I really appreciated:

Sacred spaces invoke the absolute and the divine: they will never be the same to all people, and so their management demands particular humility. Questions of law and land use and building permits do not lend themselves to arguments over the "irrational" or inexplicable. Politicians who exploit these debates for their own purposes deserve special scorn. It is not just these spaces that are worthy of special respect; so is the way we engage one another over their fate.

Cup of TEE anyone?

So this 2010, I've become somewhat of a T-shirt Collector. I finally purchased a shirt from Johnny Cupcakes, and it has become a growing collection. Manifesting the artist in me, I've always liked unique shirts ranging across simple, awesome designs to detailed illustrations. It's even more of a plus when the brand stands for something, has a purpose, and is not just a "walking billboard" (as Miles to Go puts it). In the future, my goal is to create such a brand, but I'm still on the thought and learning process of what I really want to put out under my name. It's a HUGE ordeal, nothing to take lightly at all, because when I realize this dream, I'm in it to win it. :)

For the meantime, I've been online discovering about independent brands, as well as reading on the business end of things, like fair use, and copyrights. One discovery is when I met a blogger who's a tee shirt aficionado. Loving This Tee, is all about shirts and what they're about. There's always a good amount of information on the brand and/or artists that created their piece of clothing, so readers like me can get a glimpse of what they represent. In reading through almost all of the posts in one night, I ran into CAVATA. They give 10% of every purchase to Music and Art programs in public schools, as well as non-profit organizations. But that's not what initially caught my eye. It was their first annual collaboration tee with Regan Smith Clarke clothing company, whose self named brand is inspired by vintage posters, ads, and signs. Right up my alley! With their awesome aesthetics and principle combined, how can I resist?

So the result of all this newfound venture...is a package at my front door containing this...

Support great art, great blogs, great brands and ART & MUSIC PROGRAMS! This shirt is absolutely amazing, down to every detail put into it (including: a concert ticket stub tagged onto the shirt, and the print inside the back neckline area that serves as the shirt's tag itself. An absolute steal! The picture doesn't even do it that great a justice. But with companies like CAVATA & Regan Smith Clarke, I'll be on a further lookout to support passionate companies that believe in excellence and purpose, not only in the tee shirt world, but in every area art extends its hands to.

do you ever wonder how much looking at different works of art affects your own - your style, concepts, and content?

i follow all kinds of art blogs and sites on my google reader...from gig posters, urban contemporary art, handmade prints, to crafts, vinyl toys, design and anything in between. sometimes i scroll through them mighty fast until something catches my eye. but what happens to the words in bold, photographs and all the artwork i bypass?

i'm quite convinced that they must somehow be stored on the right side of my noggin' and occasionally, i subconsciously lay them down in another form, with my own twist and interpretation.

so when they say "great minds think alike" is it because we're all subliminally, stealthily "stealing" from others with what our minds have already seen? (wait a minute, i've seen this in a movie! -__- i think it's called inception. d'oh!) alright well... this concept should be made into a movie. and if you read this and do turn it into a movie, i'd like to see my name scroll up on the credits! then again, i think i'm going to write a screenplay now...and hope that no one will come up to me w/ this same exact idea and say, "after all, great minds think alike." o_O

point is, make sure you're original. even if your concept ends up being in the liking of someone else's idea, knowing you came up with it all on your own clears your conscience as an artist, as an individual, and your reputation. protecting and being honest in all three, i believe, is a great key to success.

It was a huge privilege to take part in the Where is God? Art show. It was not only packed with talent and a united fervor for art (spanning from skits, music, beatboxing, spoken word, and many more mediums), but even more so, a shared passion for God. and that's a rare show to be in. :)

Here are the pieces I contributed to the show, including the "wages of war" pieces on the previous post, making its second showing there.

first up...just some old chucks i had fun with and drew on, to add to the street art section of the show.

also drew on the hi-tops baby phat sneakers at the far right of the other shoes. will try and get a close-up later.

"Walking on Water" - wood panel. ball point pen and Prismacolor colored pencils.

*I loved that the concept of the show really challenged the artists to answer the question "Where is God?" in our lives. The piece above reflects my experience in knowing that God is present especially when I'm ready to take on new feats, and "great waves" in my life. This represents that person in everyone who gives their full trust in God and well...takes a leap of faith and begin walking on water. It is only in these moments that we really know what we're made of, and how faithful God is. One thing's for sure, He hasn't let go. :)

*i've thought hard and delayed about my 100th post...since it's seems quite noteworthy that i've reached 3 digits in blogging. i wanted to make sure it's grand or has some extremely moving content or awesome artwork i created. but in the end...nothing better sums up my experience, from the first time i've blogged up until my 100th post, than the sentence and verse above.

- i can't keep waiting to realize my goals and dreams. if i don't act now that i am excited about it and i have the opportunity to do so...it'll pass me by. i gotta take a leap of Faith and well...JUMP all in!!

- my dream is to have my own brand...a brand that will stand up for something positive, for the things i believe in and care for, for what i love, without compromising excellence and creativity. it has to be aesthetically awesome!! what will it be? well...the big picture comprises of a space that will house shirts designed by me (and sell them), works of art by artists who needs a pushing point and encouragement, a place where good conversations, good music, and good vibes can happen...just painting you a picture here. :)

- i should stop being afraid that nothing can come out of it...'coz i mean, if i don't believe in myself and my talents and what i can put out, then nothing will definitely be the outcome. BUT! if i just step one foot forward in front of the other, make something out of what God gave me, then i'm that much closer to my dream!

- so here i go...

*if you got words of wisdom for me, some golden eggs i can keep in my basket, encouragements...i'm always all ears. ^_^

Just saw Where the Wild Things Are and I loved it! I felt like a child watching it...just let my brain shut down, and sail along Max's adventure and imagination. The score, cinematography, and my gosh, the characters were so stunning!!! The book truly came to life and you couldn't ask for more. :)

Recently purchased this print by David Flores during his solo exhibit, 18x24 @ Munkyking. Signed and numbered. :)

Old Friends, New Friends...

tonight, my sister, our friends, and i took a trip out to L.A. and checked out an art show. David Flores' "18x24" showing at Munkyking was incredibly dope.

stepping in that shop was like going inside a time machine. it brought back a ton of memories...good ones...that made me just smile at all of it. the place got a facelift, a fresh new look, fresh paint, and FRRESSSH art on its walls. :) it was sweet. saw some old friends, friends who gave me an open door and the opportunity, the time to mentor me and encourage me, and just received some great energy from them.

it was excellent to go there with people who are passionate about what they do, dream big, and are excited about art, culture, and just life. that's the company i like to keep, and meeting such individuals is purely Godsend. :) with these gals, we're just scratching the surface with our visions, and i can't wait for what's in store in the future...

before leaving, my sister and i each walked away with limited prints from the artist and was able to shake his hand. David Flores has great style in his work, and is a nice guy *{thanks yoskay for introducing me. i can't believe he was your mentor. he must be so proud of you!}.

overall...a night filled with wonderful company, art, conversations, and it must be done again!

Or you might just be the next tally on his indestructible shell!

alter ego: testudo sicarius {tortoise assassin}

messing around in photoshop and just drew on a helmet and a shield...as if he was a Roman Legionnaire. back in the day, a testudo formation was used during warfare...in which the soldiers would form a tightly knit group with their shields up, forming a "shieldwall" covering (front, sides, and top) for the entire unit resembling a tortoise shell. virtually impenetrable. great concept that i was excited to somehow portray on my guy. :)

today my sister finally watched Miss Potter, the movie. and as i fell in love with it in it's first 10 minutes, so did she. :) it's definitely an all-time favorite.

Beatrix has forever become an inspiration to me...an artist definitely ahead of her time with an extra-ordinary imagination. her art is very "easy," by which my sister describes is very effortless. it has warmth that captures us right away...
which proves to be the reason why her books are still in print today, continually discovered by one generation after another.

relatively, i bought this book called The Man Who Loves Books Too Much: The True Story of a Thief, a Detective, and a World of LIterary Obsession (i picked it up at Borders, which is rare for me. i must confess i am not a reader, and aside from high school required readings or art books, i've never finished one in my free time). so i set out to walk out with a book! i was intrigued by this particular one because firstly, its title (which reminded me of my husband who can finish a good sized booked in 2 days if he wanted to, and repeat them a few times). secondly, i open and see that they've printed it on this thick, edgeless, art-paper like pages...and that won me over in full!

as an artist, we're visual right? and aesthetics is huge! so i run my fingers on the edge of the book and find it moving in waves. that's unusually wonderful! plus, no papercuts! ha! what's not to love?!

bare with me...here's my connecting the dots part: i start and the author begins the story with her visits to these annual book fairs...with extremely rare books! as in, first edition, you can't touch it or it might tear books! one of which, she mentions, was Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit that went for $15,000. and upon watching the movie and falling in love with it all over again...i find myself looking for FIRST EDITION books too! well, online anyway. so aside from visiting peterrabbitstore.co.uk and the national trust , in which she entrusted her homes/farms and where much of her work was left (part of the Beatrix Potter Gallery), i encounter this in my hunt ☟

my and my husband's mailbox carried yellow cards this week. while his package will remain unopened, here's what's inside my little priority mailed boxes... :)

2 completey different styles of vinyl toys (artist wise) and that's all the more reason why I appreciate this art form. Now, I was never too attracted to Kozik's "smorkin' labbits" series, but for some reason, the 3d design and the labbit with it's tongue out just made me smile. So in they went in the cart. Everything was open box except for the mint labbit and Zapp from Futurama, which fittingly enough holds his "Big book of War," reminding me of my husband.

*note: part of my collecting logic isn't only based on me liking one certain type of toy or artist. a lot of it has to do with its appeal towards me (it's different for everyone) but also, how the toys are made (is it wood, vinyl, or resin? how's the articulation? how much TLC was given to its making, the quality, etc.) and even their pop culture value, like in the case of the simpsons or futurama toy. so i do give a lot of thought to what i collect. it's not based on one natured line of reason or bias. if the toy stands strong on its own by way of simplicity, fun factor, nostalgia, and the things above, then it probably will end up at my door.

feeling thoughtful today...

just wanted to make a comment on what i do everyday to keep inspired and my mind juggling with creativity...

i follow blog/subscriptions on my google reader. in an assortment of 50+ feeds they tell news of urban vinyl toys, art culture, life, spirituality, frustrations, lifestyle, more art. without it, my brain i think will be fried! but here's one that's stunned me until now that cannot compare to me feeding off art from computer screens -- one of the most amazing man made masterpiece ever...

given that Florence had so much art to give...this was simply, WOW impressive. my husband and i could not walk away from the Accademia without sneaking a picture (respectively took it without the flash). the only sad thing is this...

the outside of the Accademia filled with graffiti. :/ i wonder if they've ever tried cleaning it up. it certainly deserves it.

nonetheless...while i re-charge myself with art online, seeing works like michelangelo's DAVID is something i can take with me forever. i wish that art produced by us today, will somehow withstand time like that piece of marble. although i know there are very few who make works of art like those i saw in Florence, i do hope that in in our new forms of canvases, like that of an "art toy" sculpted out of vinyl, we somehow make the master's like michelangelo proud...that even if it's not as grand like they did before us, we are still doing what we love...and that we are doing art in our own way.

yeahhh i know...it just still doesn't seem as crazy as the guy who carved marble in 2 years and made a goliath out of david (yep, pun intended! :p). but hey, on my end...i'm going to keep on...and keep on with my hands.

I apologize for the poor quality of pics. I just did a quick snap on photobooth since it's convenient. Anyhow, the first picture below is a very proud moment for me. My sketchbook has been too white for my entire life as an artist. I never knew how to fill it up. If I liked a drawing on a page, i left it alone.
